PROVINCIAL ORGANIC PLAN

PROVINCE OF KOREA 2005

1. Mission - priorities

We, the Salesian Korean Province, give first place to the spiritual life.

We apply the Preventive System of St. John Bosco in dealing with youth who are poor and in need of help.

We strive to build a community of close friendships and togetherness based on brotherly love.

2. Present Condition of the Province

2.1 Positive Aspects

  1. The confreres and communities get along well together and maintain very good relationships.

  2. There is good interest in the work of the province and good participation in provincial events.

  3. The confreres are evenly engaged in diverse types of youth ministry.

  4. There is a lot of enthusiasm and pastoral concern among the confreres for poor youth.

  5. The provincial plan for formation has been completed according to the new Ratio (2000, 3rd edition).

  6. The confreres are comparatively young (average age is 42.2 as of Oct. 2005) and all have a chance for on-going formation.

  7. The number of aspirants entering our Society is holding steady.

  8. There are a variety of groups in the Salesian Family and all get along very well.

  9. The local Church and local society at large give a favorable appraisal to our pastoral ministry.

2.2 Some aspects that have to be worked upon

  1. Weakness in the spiritual life due to a lack of depth in prayer life.

  2. Infrequency of the “friendly chat” with the rector which is necessary for spiritual growth.

  3. Insufficient mutual communication on the part of the confreres in community due to a spirit of individualism in work.

  4. A certain lack of understanding of the common mission and community life bringing on a weakness of community pastoral activity.

  5. Insufficient professional preparation of confreres.

  6. Difficulty in forming our teachers, employees and lay people.

  7. Insufficient awareness of the concept of accompaniment and continual presence among the youth confided to our care.

  8. Lack of awareness, interest and cooperation as regards the Salesian Youth Movement.

3. Challenges

  1. Effort to put priority on the spiritual life

  2. Numerical and professional consistency for the community life and pastoral ministry of each community.

  3. The creation of an appropriate environment for formation (living space, facilities, form of community).

  4. To set up a Mission Procure and a Development Office in order to (1) give more weight to the function of planning and adjusting the pastoral ministry and life of the province into an organic pastoral ministry (missions, formation, youth ministry) and (2) to have a continuous and stable economic policy.

  5. To appoint a full-time Director of Youth Ministry

  6. The Salesian formation of our teachers, employees and lay people that work with us.

4. Lines of Activity

For the next five years we commit ourselves to the following priorities:

4.1 Giving first priority to our spiritual life

  1. Practice Lectio Divina.

  2. Promote the regular ‘friendly chat’ with the Rector

  3. Form confreres able to do spiritual direction.

  4. Foster a mentality where everyone makes his own individual life-plan for his spiritual life and every community makes a community-life plan for its own spiritual life. To have in place a system of checking these plans on a regular basis.

  5. Translate faster the biographies of Salesian saints and the various Salesian documents so as to allow all the confreres quicker access to them.

4.2 Building a community of friendship and togetherness

  1. Foster spontaneous involvement in the various programs available for formation to human maturity and development.

  2. Promote the community get-together day

  3. Hold a scrutiny of our personal poverty and community poverty on a regular basis.

4.3 Practicing the Preventive System through presence among the young

  1. Foster in the confreres a continuous and deep presence and accompaniment among the young.

  2. Form our teachers, employees, lay people and Salesian family in the Salesian spirit.

  3. Positive investment and continuous research in developing our training programs.

  4. Search for new pastoral initiatives on behalf of poor youth that need help.

  5. Animate the Salesian Youth Movement.

  6. Appoint a full-time Director of Youth Ministry

4.4 Setting up a Mission Procure and a Development Office

  1. Give more weight to the function of planning and adjusting the pastoral ministry and life of the province into an organic pastoral ministry (missions, formation and youth ministry).

  2. Have a continuous and stable economic policy.
