SHERBROOKE. Comme partout ailleurs dans l’hémisphère nord, school is out Il n’en est pas ainsi partout. L’autre jour, je recevais un courriel du Pérou. Dans ce pays, les vacances d’été s’étendent de janvier à mars. La beauté des saisons, l’énigme de la planète. Une touche d’astronomie et tout s’explique.

Tout le monde passe? – School is out!

Cet été encore, ce n’est pas le grand calme au Salésien. Les Loisirs du Quartier Nord de Sherbrooke- genre d’OTJ- a établi ses pénates sur notre site jusqu’à la mi-août. Quelque 270 enfants, de 6 à 12 ans, sont inscrits. Un beau terrain de jeu (les soirées, ce sont les équipes de football de la Ville, les Bulldogs, qui l’occupent), des locaux confortables, même pour la sieste, le Carrefour de l’Estrie à quelques pas, un boisé « mystérieux », tout est là pour s’amuser et apprendre.

Au Camp Savio, pour une 5^e année, une cinquantaine d’ados passent trois semaines intensives en immersion d’anglais. Une belle nouveauté cette année : un magnifique chapiteau. Ne pas oublier que les jeunes de l’OTJ du village de Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley et des environs ont leur camp de jour aussi sur le site, profitant de la piscine, des activités sur le lac, du boisé et du grand terrain de jeu, tout cela sur les berges du Lac Magog. Ce chapiteau a pu être construit grâce à une partie de la succession du p. Paul Cossette, léguée par sa mère décédée en 1997, et il sera nommé à sa mémoire.

Le Bosco-bicycle en est à sa 28^e année (28^e saison aussi pour le p. Alain, puisqu’il faisait partie de l’équipe d’animation dès le début en 1985, avant même son Ordination- dit en passant, le 5 juin, il célébrait son 20^e anniversaire de prêtrise). Le 1^er départ s’est fait le 1 juillet avec le trajet des montagnes. L’équipe d’animation s’était réunie en quelques occasions avant le camp pour la formation.

Là où les conditions s’y prêtent, c’est une caractéristique des institutions salésiennes (écoles, paroisses, etc.) d’opérer un camp d’été pour les jeunes pendant la période estivale. Ainsi à la paroisse Marie-Auxiliatrice de RDP, à Montréal, le camp va du 26 juin au 9 août. Des enfants de 4 à 15 ans, quelque 500 enfants & jeunes répartis en 5 sous-groupes, selon l’âge.

Le 8 juin pour la soirée, j’étais à Val-Morin dans les Laurentides à l’ancienne Auberge du P’tit Bonheur (fondée par le P. Marcel De la Sablonnière, s.j.). L’équipe dirigeante du camp, dont le directeur est le P. Richard Authier, tenait 3 jours de formation pour quelque 70 jeunes adultes, la plupart engagés, d’autres bénévoles. Ils seront les moniteurs du Camp d’été HappyDayz. Ce samedi soir était réservé à la réflexion : partage en équipes, possibilité du sacrement de la réconciliation – je penserais qu’environ 80% des jeunes s’en sont prévalu, 4 prêtres à leur disposition- célébration de la Parole devant le St-Sacrement exposé. Et bien sûr, tradition maintenue, un pizza party pour couronner le tout vers 23h.

À Toronto, à la Paroisse St.Benedict, le camp SummerDaze : quelque 180 jeunes pendant 4 semaines animés par une cinquantaine de jeunes- niveau high school- des bénévoles pour la plupart. Ils ont suivi une semaine de formation avant l’ouverture du camp afin de se familiariser avec la méthode éducative de Don Bosco. SummerDaze célébrait son 25^e anniversaire cette année (Voir www.stbenedicts.ca/summerdazecamp.html ).

À Surrey, B.C. à la paroisse Our Lady of Good Counsel, le paysage est différent. Ils ont trois camps différents pendant juillet : un camp de dance d’une semaine, un autre camp de sports pendant 2 semaines et un 3^e, un camp biblique d’une semaine pour tous les âges, même d’autres membres de la famille.

Évidemment les salésiens ne font pas tout! Le personnel manque et même là, ce ne serait pas l’idéal, car cette situation nous permet de former des leaders. Autrefois c’était les abbés et candidats à la vie salésienne qui faisaient ce travail. Dans mon expérience personnelle, j’ai beaucoup apprécié ces étés avec les jeunes et l’équipe de salésiens et de laïcs. Déjà un an après mon noviciat, je faisais partie de l’équipe du Camp Don Bosco à Newton, NJ, et l’année suivante, j’étais au Camp Namuncurà à West Haverstraw, NY. Ce fut pour moi un excellent stage dans la pratique du système d’éducation de Don Bosco qui me fit mieux saisir ce qu’était la vie salésienne.

Fermant cette longue parenthèse, j’ajoute qu’il y eut ces semaines-ci au Salésien d’autres événements qui reviennent chaque fin d’année, à savoir, le Gala Sportif, la journée d’activités pour toute l’école (la promenade à La Ronde à Montréal, la grande favorite), le rafting, le bal des finissants, etc. Lors du Gala Sportif, cette année pour la 1^ère fois de son histoire, ce ne fut pas un ancien élève à être introduit au Temple de la Renommée, mais plutôt une personne bien connue du milieu sherbrookois, mais qui est associée au Salésien depuis de nombreuses années. Il s’agit de Jean Arel, chroniqueur sportif. Dans son discours d’acceptation, il avait des paroles pleines de finesse et de sagesse pour nos jeunes. En le présentant, le p. George Harkins a dit ceci : « Jean valorise le sport comme une autre école de formation pour nos jeunes où on leur propose des valeurs et une discipline pour les aider à devenir de bons citoyens de demain. Nos jeunes ont besoin d’encouragement, de sentir qu’il y a des personnes qui croient en eux et qui les appuient. Jean personnifie ces valeurs.»

La passion du rafting

Parlant d’anciens, le Salésien est fier des siens. Chaque année, on organise des retrouvailles selon les promotions. Le 7 septembre, à titre d’exemple, se retrouveront les promotions 1988, 1993,1998, 2003 et 2008.

F inissants 2013, venez visiter votre arbre en 2018...

L’arbre 2013 se trouve depuis la fin des examens parmi ses « confrères » des années précédentes, longeant la rue Don Bosco. Planter un arbre, cela peut sembler banal, mais c’est un geste qui prend tout son sens lorsqu’on contemple cette plantation d’espèces différentes, peut-être à l’image des générations passées, chacune avec sa propre physionomie.

Chaque année, vers la fin de l’année scolaire chaque communauté salésienne se réserve un temps pour célébrer le fait d’être « communauté ». Il va sans dire qu’on s’efforce de faire communauté tous les jours, mais il est bon de réserver un moment pour en prendre davantage conscience. À la mi-juin, nous sommes allés visiter La Halte du Pèlerin. C’est un vignoble près de Beauvoir qui produit d’excellentes boissons. Après une dégustation de vins- et ayant découvert que la fille du propriétaire est une ancienne du Salésien (ce qui nous valut une coupe supplémentaire!), nous avons fait une autre halte, spirituelle celle-là (ou devrais-je dire, spirituelle, elle aussi!) au Sanctuaire du Sacré-Cœur de Beauvoir, avant la destination finale de la journée, à la Brasserie de Fleurimont pour un superbe repas aux fruits de mer.

Parlant de communauté, chaque semaine, on publie à notre maison provinciale de New Rochelle, N.Y. un bulletin de nouvelles qui contient toujours un message du Père Provincial, une page ou deux. Ainsi on nous tient au courant des événements de notre vaste province, territoire qui s’étend aux USA, du Mississipi à l’Atlantique et qui au nord comprend tout le Canada. Ce bulletin numérique, E-service, contient différents événements, autant les heureux que les tristes. La vie est tissée de tout, n’est-ce pas? On y apprend que tel confrère que l’on a bien connu est malade ou encore est décédé ou qu’un autre fut décoré pour son activité éducative ou pour son action sociale ou pastorale en faveur des gens défavorisés, etc. Cela nous donne occasion de prier pour un tel ou de lui envoyer un mot d’encouragement ou encore de remercier le Seigneur de tel bienfait. La plus récente publication nous apportait la bonne nouvelle de l’Ordination à la prêtrise de deux confrères, les PP. James Zettel, de la région de Toronto, et Miguel Suarez. MONTREAL In the first days of June took place the inscriptions for catechism school in view of preparation for First Communion and Confirmation. As of now, there are close to 700 children registered.

Bro, Dieunel Victor from New Rochelle, N.Y. came to spend a few days with us. Together with Bro. Adam Dupré, he will participate at the summer camp as pastoral animator of First Space, a brief time of spiritual formation. Every day, there will be an intervention for one group of campers.

During one of the Sunday Masses, Fr. Luc presented to the assembly the coordinators of the liturgical ministers. The purpose of those activities is to render more meaningful and beautiful the church functions and to maintain the church itself orderly and clean.

HappyDayz: a joyful summer ahead

School ended with the feast of St.John the Baptist. The day after, the summer camp started for some 450 children. Divided in small groups of ten, they will be guided and animated in their recreational and formative activities by some 60 young adults, coordinated by older animators, Fr. Richard being the camp director. It will last 7 weeks.

Toward the end of the month, about 100 parishioners went on pilgrimage to the Sacred Heart Sanctuary in Beauvoir near Sherbrooke, Fr. Luc accompanying them.

On June 28, vigil of the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, Fr. Richard, Fr. Luc and 4 representatives of the parish left for New Rochelle, N.Y. to assist at the priestly Ordination of 2 confreres of our province, Fr James Zettel, who hails from Ontario, and Fr. Miguel Suarez. They were ordained by Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

SURREY, B.C. June got off to a wonderful start with the Praise Team’s 16^th Annual two night extravaganza musical production. Running time with intermission was close to a three hour show wrapped in an amazing bundle of energy. This year’s program and story line was around the title of “The Keeper.” It was held at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium with over 250 cast members ranging in ages from five to twenty-six. They presented the scriptural text taken from Matthew, 7:7. “Ask and You Shall Receive, Seek and You Shall Find. Knock and It Shall Be Opened Unto You.” Fr. Dave opened the show with a welcoming prayer to the melody of Amazing Grace, which the full house audience joined in singing at both performances. Congratulations are in order to all the performers, and behind the scenes staff, choreographers, stage hands, moms and dads who put in endless hours of preparation and practice time helping to make this excellent production such an inspiring presentation.

Our Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist were mandated during all the Masses on the Feast of Corpus Christi in their sacred responsibilities to the faithful, our shut-ins, the elderly and the nine nursing homes’ residents, plus Surrey Memorial Hospital patients that they bring the Lord to as caregivers of Holy Communion. The Annual Corpus Christi Procession was also held mid-afternoon around OLGC’s School soccer field where five stations for the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament were set up for the faithfuls’ participation. As the profession moved on, Eucharist hymns were sung, and this special occasion concluded with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament outside by our Marian fountain.

OLGC will have three different summer camps at three separate weeks throughout July:
1^st week- a Dance Camp for all ages (Praise Team Summertime Workshops). The camp runs all day into the evening hours for the older ones.
2^nd camp then follows - 2 weeks of sport camp usually with about 40 or more campers each week.
3^rd camp. Finally, 1 week of Bible Camp for the younger set with all ages and family members participating.

Gospel Roads II Mission Team Orientation was on June 7. The Salesian Cooperators, YCOM and the Gospel Road II Missionaries attended the Mass of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the meeting followed in the DBYC. This was mostly a Spiritual Orientation Meeting for the Mission team, YCOM and Salesian Cooperators. The meeting started with a song: “Love Pass it On” followed by a Scripture Reading about Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16: 14-31) an inspiring talk by Fr. Dave about our Baptismal call, a prayer service about Christ. “Christ has no body, hands, feet …but “ours” on earth” and concluding with each participant receiving a lighted candle from Fr. Dave. Five University students will attend Gospel Roads II in Port Chester New York from June 22 to 29 and it will be our first OLGC expedition in the Gospel Roads ministry. The next OLGC Gospel Road I expedition will be for Toronto (from July 20 to 27) and 7 high schools students will be attending. The Gospel Roads Missionaries received their mandate from Fr. Mario and were presented a light chain with the Cross. Surely they made an impact to the OLGC Congregation. After the Saturday ceremony, the Salesian Cooperators treated the missionaries, friends and parents with refreshments.

The first Monday in June saw held our SDB Community two session planning and evaluation meetings in our community library. It was a fruitful and insightful event to benefit not only our parishioners, but ourselves. Our 3-day Salesian June Outing took us to White Rock, from June 10 thru 12^th for our respite-retreat this year. The weather cooperated as we heard Mass together in one of our hotel rooms overlooking the Semiahoo Bay. This was our venue for this year where we gathered together venturing out for our main meals as a community.

A Benefit Fundraiser was held in the form of a Dinner Dance entitled “A Night of Rhythm & Jive” presented by the Just Jammin’ Band with all the proceeds going to OLGC World Youth Day representatives to Rio this coming July. On the 13^th Fr. Dave and Bro. Jerry traveled to Toronto to participate in St. Benedict’s 25^th Anniversary Celebrations of Camp SummerDaze. Former staff, counselors and campers attended a special program of entertainment that was held to an overflowing crowd in the main court of Monsignor Johnson High School.

Fr. Jan left for a month’s visit to his homeland and family. We wished him well and Godspeed for a relaxed, rest-filled holiday, and retreat with his Polish confreres.

For the past month, Fr. John has been residing at Imperial Place, which is just a block over from the parish. This was at his suggestion and choosing. The facility is a retirement residence with professional health care assistants on staff and inclusive of 3 meals daily. We hope this short term stay will help him get his strength back, the ability to exercise and plenty of rest. He returns to help out with our weekend confessions and during the Mother of Perpetual Help Wednesday night devotions.

The weatherman surprised us with the sun shedding its warm rays upon us for the Parish Picnic. Various ethnic food booths and their aromas filled the air from the numerous parishioners cooking on the spot. Tents, tables and chairs were arranged outside around the Don Bosco Youth Center, while inside were various games, a mini golf course and a jumping-bean ship for the younger set. Our youth had their respective booth, and the pastor of our neighboring Ukrainian parish joined us for this festivity.

The 23^rd was the last Sunday of Masses for Fr. Dave before he headed to his new assignment on June 26^th. There was a surprised outpouring of affection with a potluck farewell dinner by the parishioners of all ages, especially the youth, with song, dance, speeches, picnics and parties – plus outstanding entertainment, cards, gifts, etc. that were held and presented to him in thanksgiving for the 6 years he has graced OLGC Parish. Fr. Dave will be sorely missed.

Fr. George Atok arrived on the 19^th for some days of getting acquainted with Fr. Dave’s duties before returning to Elizabeth, NJ, to return again sometime in August to join our community as the 6^th confrere in residence here. - Fr. Dave said the Graduation Mass for our Grade 7 Class. He and the Salesian Community joined them and their parents for the concelebrated Mass and for the Graduation Awards’ Dinner. The Centre was beautifully decorated in white, blue and silver with an inspiring ice sculpture of their mascot. The grade 6 Class and their parents were the hosts for this meaningful event.

Fr. Mario flew to Manila on the 22^nd for some weeks of holiday visiting with his ailing mother and for follow-up appointments with the clinic for his heart and allergies. Kindly keep him in prayer. Finally our busy month of June concluded with a weekend of the Youth for Christ Discovery Camp with over 100 participants. (J.H.)

A blessing for the Province and for the Toronto-Hamilton Community is the ordination on June 29, 2013 of Father James Zettel of Hanover, Ontario, along with Father Miguel Suarez of Port Chester, New York. Through the foresight of Fr. Mike Pace, and to the great surprise of Fr. Jim, SummerDaze Camp staff travels to Don Bosco Retreat Center, Stony Point, NY, for its staff retreat weekend, so that it is also able to participate in Fr. Jim’s Ordination Mass. A second bus of St. Benedict parishioners also makes the trip for the Ordination and First Mass.

On Saturday, June 15, twenty-five years of energy, enthusiasm and memories take form around SummerDaze Camp’s 25^th Anniversary Celebration that features Mass, food and entertainment and that brings together hundreds from Salesian Family and Salesian Youth Movement (SYM). Bro. Jerry Harasym, Fr. Dave Sajdak and Bro. Bernie Dubé return to Toronto in recognition of the role they played in starting and developing the camp. Fr. Tom Dunne, Provincial, presides at the Mass and speaks of the significance of the camp in the human and spiritual development of campers and staff. Perhaps the most telling sign of the camp movement’s value is that past and current administration and staff conceive, organize and successfully run the celebration.

Another extraordinary and joyful event takes place on Sunday, June 23, 2013 when six young adults and adults involved in SYM activities become Salesian Cooperators during the 12:45 P.M. St. Benedict Mass. Mrs. Marilena Berardinelli and Sr. Lise Guitard, F.M.A. from Don Bosco Centre in Markham provide the nearly two years of preparation. Cooperators from the Greater Toronto Area who make it to the Induction Mass renew their promises as Cooperators.

In the middle of the month Fr. Damir Stojić, S.D.B., graduate of Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, and Chaplain at University of Zagreb, Croatia, arrives with a group of young adult members of his ministry team. He and his team offer retreat experiences to Croatian parishes and groups around Ontario. Fr. Frank Kelly preaches at Don Bosco Residence for the team’s own retreat which begins their ministry; then he preaches for one of their programs at Queen of Peace Croatian Franciscan Centre in Norval, Ontario.

ROME : Fête du Recteur Majeur: trois dons

“Trois sont les choses les plus belles que j’ai reçues en étant Recteur Majeur”, a confié hier, le 24 juin, le père Pascual Chávez au cours d’un bref Mot du soir prononcé au terme de la fête simple dédiée au successeur de Don Bosco à la Maison générale de Rome. Une fête qui, au terme de son deuxième mandat, a eu les tons d’un remerciement pour 12 ans de service de l’autorité dans la Congrégation salésienne.

“La première, c’était la possibilité de mieux connaitre Don Bosco et, dans la mesure du possible, de l’imiter!”. Le père Chávez a raconté que cette tension a commencé en particulier quand le père Egidio Viganò (Recteur Majeur 1977-1995) le convoqua en 1988 (centenaire de la mort de Don Bosco) pour lui communiquer son intention de le nommer provincial du Mexique-Guadalajara et lui dit: “Don Bosco ne mourra pas si tu seras le Don Bosco de demain!”. “Je ne pensais pas que cette phrase aurait ensuite guidé ma vie quand, en qualité de Recteur Majeur, j’ai été ensuite appelé à mieux le connaitre et surtout à le transmettre aux autres”.

Le deuxième don reçu comme Recteur Majeur, ce sont les jeunes “Dès que j’étais aspirant, j’ai considéré les jeunes comme un don de Dieu! Je me sens vraiment heureux au milieu d’eux, vraiment, aller à leur rencontre et être en relation avec eux me semblent une chose très naturelle. C’est un don que Dieu m’a fait et, comme je le dis toujours, ils représentent un don pour tout peuple; un peuple qui n’a plus de jeunes est un peuple sans avenir”. “Tout comme pour la société, les jeunes sont également un don pour l’Église et pour nous, Famille salésienne. S’il y a les jeunes, pour nous les salésiens, il y a un avenir! Pour cette raison, je renouvelle mon appel à retourner aux jeunes comme notre raison d’être!”.

La possibilité de découvrir la Famille salésienne comme valeur est le troisième don que le père Chávez considère avoir reçu en tant que Recteur Majeur. Des premières rencontres avec les Filles de Marie Auxiliatrice, au cours de la formation initiale, à la découverte des autres groupes. “Aujourd’hui la Famille salésienne est vraiment un arbre! Nous sommes 30 groupes! Il faut compléter un processus d’unification qui la conduise à agir avec des intentions et des projets partagés. ‘C’est sur le territoire que la Famille salésienne doit se rendre présente’, disait le père Vecchi, et je crois que le moment est venu de travailler dans cette direction”.

La fête du Recteur Majeur, qui poursuit la tradition de la fête faite à de Don Bosco de son vivant, a vu hier, tard dans la matinée, la célébration de l’Eucharistie, à laquelle ont participé plusieurs salésiens de Rome, les provinciaux récemment nommés au terme de leur cours, les salésiens et le personnel laïc de la Maison générale. Sont intervenues aussi Mère Yvonne Reungoat, Supérieure générale des Filles de Marie Auxiliatrice et quelques membres de son Conseil. Nombreux messages de vœux ont été adressés au Recteur Majeur par les salésiens, les membres de la Famille salésienne, les amis de Don Bosco et, surtout les jeunes.

Feast of the Rector Major: three gifts received

“Being Rector Major has brought me three beautiful gifts” the Rector Major confided yesterday, 24 June, in the course of a short goodnight at the conclusion of a simple feast at the Generalate in honour of the successor of Don Bosco. Yesterday’s feast, coming at the end of the Rector Major’s second term of office, was marked by gratitude for his 12 years of service of authority in the congregation.

“The first gift I received was the opportunity to get to know Don Bosco better and, as far as possible, to imitate him!”

The second gift I received as Rector Major was the gift of the young people. “Right from the time when I was an aspirant, I considered the young people as a gift from God. ….For this reason, I renew my appeal to return to the young as our whole reason for being.”
 
Discovering the value of the Salesian Family is the third gift Fr Chavez says he received as Rector Major.

The Feast of the Rector Major continues the tradition of the feast of Don Bosco’s name-day.
