Finally Bro Bernie participated at the assembly for
vocation directors held at the Newman Center in
downtown Toronto on Sunday, February 3, which is
also the day of prayer for vocations to the
consecrated life.
SURREY, BC. The New Year 2008 certainly hit
Our Lady of Good Counsel Community with a
bang! We ushered in the New Year with a 10 p.m.
Mass for those who wished to attend the
concelebrated Mass. The church was full, and all
the New Year’s Day Masses, which followed our
regular Sunday Mass schedule, were well attended.
Fr. Mario preached at all those Masses and that
evening flew to the Philippines for a 3-week visit
with his aging mother.
As Bro. Jerry went to retrieve the Vancouver
Sun morning paper, via the rectory offices hallway,
he was surprised on opening the inner door to see
the lights all on; the front doors to the rectory wide
open, as well as Fr. Mario’s office door smashed
with broken glass, keys, and broken wood pried
with a crow bar thrown literally everywhere. He
phoned Rudi, our head custodian and plant
manager, right away. Needless to say, a good two-
hour robbery, all recorded on our security cameras,
had taken place during the night, boldly taking
some recording/projection equipment newly
purchased at an early-bird, Boxing Day sale event.
Consequently the police were called, a steel door
needed to be purchased and installed, and other
security measures (like locks being changed) had to
be done, plus notifying Fr. Mario via long distance,
to really know what was stolen. Never a dull
moment!
On Jan. 6, the feast of the Epiphany, the Polish
community invited us to a Christmas “potluck”
dinner at around 2:30 p.m. held in OLGC School
Auditorium, where the customary “Oplatek waffer
blessing” took place during the course of the meal.
The secondary schools reopened after the Christmas
break on Jan. 7, and slowly school activities
abounded in Don Bosco Gym once more. The
deanery meeting was held at Precious Blood Parish
on the 8th with the Salesian Cooperators’ meeting
being on Friday the 11th.
During Bro. Jerry’s stress test at his heart
specialist’s office on the morning of the 8th he felt
some discomfort, and mentioned it to the assistant
administering the exam. She didn’t waste any time in
getting him to sit down while she consulted with the
specialist. The next thing he realized was that he was
being scheduled for a cardiac catheterization
procedure at the Royal Columbian Hospital, which
was done by Dr. R. Kuritzky and his team in New
Westminster on Jan. 15. Fr. Dave and Salesian
Cooperator, Mr. Neville Buckle, accompanied
Brother to and from this “adventure,” which was
accomplished through his right wrist. Brother is now
the wise owner of two drug-coated stents, and
passed with flying colors, the all day, 7:30 a.m. to
6:30 p.m. event on a 4:00 p.m. sandwich and some
apple juice while his healing signs were being
monitored.
Fr. Mario returned from the Philippines after
lunch on the 19th in time to say the 4:00 p.m. Sto
Nino Mass and celebrations, plus the 9:30 a.m.
Sunday Mass Confirmation enrolment ceremony.
The First Communion enrolment ceremony took
place on the following Sunday. That middle of the
month week was one interspersed with about five
funeral Masses…Polish, Italian and English. Frs.
Dave and John represented the Community at the
Monday, Jan. 21, gathering of religious men, with
both bishops present at St. Helen’s for supper and
camaraderie. Fr. Jan, in the meantime, was still doing
the Polish Family New Year visits and blessings.
Fr. Dave and Knight of Columbus, Mr. Ralph
Dotzler, went to pick up Fr. Richard, who was
arriving at Vancouver’s International Airport around
11 a.m. on the 31st. He gave the opening conference
to the community at 4:00 p.m., and said a Mass in
honour of St. John Bosco with the CCD children and
that particular Salesian Family Night.
The novena of Masses in preparation for the
parish feast of St. John Bosco (which was celebrated
on Saturday, Feb. 2 at a 5:00 p.m. Mass had six
concelebrants, with Fr. Richard Authier as the main
presider), had a photo gallery of different Salesian
Blesseds each day for the duration of the novena
displayed in front of the main altar. Although
winter’s wonderland storm took some wind out of the
sails from all these procedures, with school closings
and what not, Don Bosco was certainly still honoured
through the OLGC School basketball tournament,
many other activities and prayers. Certainly the
Salesian Family (Cooperators and alumni) helped to
