Peter Gonsalves
Sunday 28th Jan -- By the grace of God, our Salesian communities in
Gujarat situated approximately 600 kms from Bhuj, the epicentre of the
earthquake have been unaffected. Some buildings in Dakor, have developed minor
cracks - but that is all the damage recorded.
The Salesians in Gujarat
are already joining other humanitarian bodies in bringing assistance to the
those severely affected in whatever way they
can. At present, the
death-count has touched 6000. But people fear many more in the surrounding
districts have been feared killed. The breakdown of
communication systems
have also added to the magnitude of the disaster. Presently, the provincial of
Mumbai, Fr. Tony D'Souza, has requested the
Salesians in Gujarat and
especially the students in the formation houses to participate in the rescue
operations. Meanwhile, attempts are being made
to network with the Church-run
organizations near the affected areas
