FIJI: FIRST SALESIAN GRADUATES

SUVA:  30th October --  The Feast of Bl. Michael Rua brought good news for nine Third Year Salesian students at the Pacific Regional Seminary, Fiji, yesterday, with the posting of their names as certain recipients of the Diploma of Theology.  This is the first group of Salesians, the founding group therefore at PRS, and all nine who have presented have achieved this important first academic title.  The Salesians first came to Fiji in 1999 in the form of a Formation Community which has also become an active centre of Salesian presence amongst the young people of the Fiji Islands.  The Seminary they attend is affiliated with the Roman Pontifical University, the Urbanianum.  Courses at PRS are also recognized by SPATS, the South Pacific Association of Theological Schools.
The nine young Salesians, all candidates for the priesthood (it is possible also for non-ordination candidates to achieve diploma status) hail from Samoa and Tonga.  In December of this year they commence a year of preparation for Final Vows, beginning with the Hesed Programme organised for Religious at this stage of formation throughout the Islands of the South Pacific by the CMSPI or Conference of Major Superiors of the Pacific Islands.
Graduation Day for the Diploma will take place on November 14th.
