"You
Salesians have a very special vocabulary"!
ROME: 24th March 2008 -- We probably knew that, but certainly Fr
Arnaiz, the Marianist former Superior General leading the discernment
process, found opportunity to say it; he was reflecting on the kind of
terminology he saw emerging as people went through the discernment
steps, steps which turned up two profiles, one of the main challenges
facing the Congregation (3) and one of the kind of person Chapter
members want as Rector Major (5).
The challenges: return to the young, renewal of our
holiness, fidelity to the charism.
The person: personal holiness, leadership and
teamwork, fidelity to the charism, prophetic vision, a father.
"I like your desire to have a superior who is a
father" Fr Arnaiz said.
By the end of the day, Fr Arnaiz said there would be
little need for further steps to help guide people towards convergence,
so tomorrow morning at 9.00 the question goes to a vote. You will be
able to follow the result via ANS and the sdb.org website.
Fr Arnaiz went on to prepare people for the next
exhaustive stage of discernment - the choice of Vicar. He pointed
out the wide variety of role descriptions across male Congregations -
right through to the Jesuits who don't have one, at least not until
death or some other reason prevents their Superior General from
functioning.
But that will be another story.
