4357_Youth Encounter Retreat – a preparation for Shine Silver Sabama
April 24, 2017
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea -- On the 20th to 22nd April, 32 young people of the Mary Help of Christians Parish, Sabama, had the opportunity of experiencing the 'Youth Encounter' (Y.E.) – a formation program especially designed for the youth and those who are journeying with them. This was held at Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu.
The program commenced in the afternoon of Thursday and engaged the participants very well. "The presence of the Lord was felt throughout the sessions", shared one participant. The next day led the participants deeper into sharing and praying. Several young people shed tears as they realized their strengths and weaknesses. Some of the shy ones who were unable to talk on the first day, were able to open up, shed their shyness and share their thoughts, reflections and prayers. The majority of the participants made their peace with God through the Sacrament of Confession. The best session was the 'Circles of Love'. It gave the participants the opportunity to support each other through prayer. The second and final day Eucharists were celebrated by the parish priest, Fr. Sonny Fajardo, SDB.
After an enjoyable meal and ice-cream, the young people returned radiant and joyful after a great experience of meeting strangers who had now become friends. "It felt like we have known each other for a long time" said one participant feeling satisfied at the success of the three-day retreat.
The Youth Encounter is a spiritual program which helps strengthen the faith of the young people and shapes them to be better examples in their school, workplace and community. "It is my hope that every young person in the parish between the ages of 15 – 25 will have the opportunity to undergo this spiritual experience thus prepare themselves spiritually for the Silver Jubilee of the parish. We can then truly say 'Shine, Silver Sabama' of our young people", said Fr. Fajardo.
The young people were from Pari, Sabama, Gabutu, Vabukori and Serokone (Taurama). The youth encounter was facilitated by Rica Lavilla. She was assisted by Donabel Homingu, Ian Zuasula, Sheryl Extra-Isoaimo and Dylan Kossin. The service facilitators were the participants of last year's YE, the 1st batch for the parish, Bradely Dobbin, Eugene Mantanepoa and Grita Sariman.
