"Look down kindly on us
Fr Felix, great man, good friend! We will miss you"
CEBU: 16th May 2009 -- Fr Felix Glowicki, who first came
to the Philippines more than half a century ago as a young Practical
Trainee, was buried today, 16th May, in Lawaan, Talisay City, Cebu,
after a brief illness. He died on 11th May, after having suffered a
stroke three weeks previously.
On the morning of 24th April, a staff member found
Fr Felix unconscious in his office just after his regular routine of
meeting the workers. He was rushed to hospital and diagnosed as having
suffered a slight stroke. Unable to speak he write that he simply lost
his footing and fell. At that stage he waived the offer to be anointed,
though yielded later. Despite early signs of recovery, his health
quickly deteriorated.
Born on May 18, 1931 to Franciszek and Anna, Felix
Glowicki was a young Polish soldier with a General Certificate of
Education before he entered the Salesian novitiate in Burwash, England.
He spent his formation years in Shrigley where he recalled with
fondness the friends and Salesians who influenced him to try the
missions. He came the Philippines in 1957 as a practical trainee for
two years. After his ordination to the priesthood on March 25, 1963, he
returned there. He then spent 46 years of his life serving Filipino
youth, teaching and ministering the sacraments, attracting and
promoting vocations, building buildings and cultivating wonderful
friendships, and most importantly, leading people to God in the style
of St. John Bosco.
Those who knew him will remember a smiling friend,
cheerful priest, an indefatigable worker, a firm educator, a gardener,
a musician, a youth club leader, a warm-hearted confrere and a model
religious.
Fr Felix was just two days shy of his 78th birthday
on the day of his burial. His confreres in the southern Philippines put
things this way: "We all know what a blast he will have celebrating his
birthday in the Salesian garden in heaven. Look down on us kindly, Fr
Felix, great man, good friend! We will miss you".
