TETERE (Solomon Islands): 5 June 2011 -- It may be a
simple list of activities for the month of May - but in fact
it is much, much more. From our perspective, with
austraLasia heading for its 20th birthday in a few years
time, and nearing its 3,000th edition, we can see
considerable communications growth taking place in parts of
the Region - and what better day than the 45th WCD to draw
attention to one of them: a relatively new but very active
young correspondent, Br. Moise Palaku sdb. Moise, by the
way, is from Congo-Brazzaville, Goma Diocese (Katora North
Kivu to be precise) but did all his studies thus far in the
Central African Province based in Lubumbashi. His former
Rector (and probably novice master) has been recently
appointed provincial of that province and takes office on 25
June. Anyway, congratulations to Moise for his
communications efforts in English, given that he would be
more accustomed to French than anything else, and now on a
day-to-day basis would be managing with Kanaka or SI Pidgin.
The period 21-31 May was intense at Tetere:
- 21 May: the second year students had their final
Recollection (at Tanagai Marist Convent)
- 24 May: celebrations for Mary Help of Christians - of
course! Mass in the late afternoon in the Parish, but
then a truly 'Salesian' day with sports on the field and
something special in the dining hall.
- 27 May the Rectors Cup (Fr Michael Lap is the Rector), but
perhaps more significant was the turning of the first sod
(the 'breaking of the ground' as our correspondent puts it)
for the new boys dormitory. Students, staff and workers were
all present to witness this event which will mean so much to
them. Special thanks expressed to Bonn Mission Office which
(again) is playing such a key role in the Pacific, and a
word of special gratitude for Mr Benny Bacani and his
efforts for the Solomon Islanders: "This new house, your
dormitory, will restore your body after a heavy day's work"m
he told the boys.
- 29 May the parish concluded the month of May by inviting
all its mission stations to join in pilgrimage from the Don
Bosco Rural Training Centre to the Christ the King altar for
a common celebration in honour of the Help of Christians.
- 31 May party time! An enormous sunset party, awards
for those who undertook basic computer literacy courses;
thanks to Sr Anne Marie FMA who taught them; farewell to a
member of staff and a send-off to 2nd Year students heading
out for six months of practical work.
Tank iu, Bro Moise.
