In/enculturation - a lighter moment: only read on if
you have a sense of humour!
SOMEWHERE: 28th October '04 -- There has been some solid
reading of late; perhaps a lighter moment won't go astray. A missionary
correspondent, reflecting on his in-or-en-culturation, as he puts it, makes the
following confession -
Entering the local culture has sometimes meant :
- I am too lazy to read anything besides the local
newspaper.
- I forget the theological meaning of this liturgical action,
so let's skip it.
- The principal of the school does not like to be
corrected.
- I cannot wake up every morning for meditation.
- The economer (bursar?) always complains about my
expenditures.
- Missionaries should not become rectors because there is
already enough competition.
- I don't like the new cook.
- I would like a holiday, and my sister lives in the
USA.
- Our community always sings the same old songs.
- I don't want to change community.
- I am too old to work with that kind of young
person.
- Who do the superiors in Rome think they
are?
