Ordinations within the Region in the lead-up to Pentecost

MANILA (Philippines) and SUVA (Fiji): 12 June 2011 -- In the last issue we indicated the ordinations to diaconate and priesthood of men from EAO who are living and working outside of the Region.  Now we offer the same for those living and working within the Region.  Once again, if anyone has been left out, please let us know.  We do our best with the information that comes in.

April 8, 2011 (Suva) - One Salesian from the Australia-Pacific Province, Filipo Kapeli from Samoa, was ordained deacon in Suva, Fiji. Filipo attends the Pacific Regional Seminary and is a member of the Don Bosco House community at Nakasi in Suva. Archbishop Petero Mataca of Suva was the ordaining prelate. Most likely Filipo will be appointed to Samoa where he will exercise his diaconate in preparation for priestly ordination some time in 2012.

April 9, 2011 (Parañaque) - Four were ordained deacons from four nationalities. 1 Vietnamese (Vincent Hai), 1 Indonesian but PNG-SI missionary (Peter Ryan), 1 Filipino (Gino Godinez) and 1 East Timorese (Agnelo Moreira). The Ordaining Prelate was Salesian Bishop Patrick Buzon. The motto of the new deacons is "My grace is enough for you." (2 Cor. 12:9)

April 30, 2011
(Parañaque) - Perpetual Profession of 8 confreres. 5 from FIN (Erasto Dizon, Umijun Binueza, Jake Lopez, Marlon Eleosida, Michael Angelo Hernandez), 1 from KOR but PNG-SI missionary (Stefano Yu), 1 from Indonesia (Adie Prinanto), 1 from Myanmar (Victor Khun Myat Aung). Their motto is "God's gifts and call are irrevocable." (Rom. 11:29)

May 6, 2011
(Parañaque) - Feast of Saint Dominic Savio. 2 were ordained priests and 1 deacon. They are all PNG-SI missionaries. The 2 new priests are (Fr. Savio Angelo S. Sanchez, a Filipino, and Fr. Joseph Tran Phuoc Tinh, a Vietnamese) The new deacon is Rev. Stefano Yu, a Korean. The Ordaining Prelate was Bishop Roberto C. Mallari, the Auxiliary Bishop of San Fernando, Pampanga. (Fr. Angel comes from Pampanga).

A "novelty" in this Ordination were the "Lilies of the Altar" from Saint Dominic Savio Parish and Mary Help of Christians Parish. These are young girls from the two Salesian Parishes who accompanied some parts of the Mass with their dancing (the Gloria, Sanctus and the Memorial Acclamation). The two new priests had served as deacons in said parishes. During the exchange of Peace, a group of Vietnamese sisters  together with one Vietnamese Salesian Brother sang a Vietnamese hymn. Some of the hymns sung during the Mass were original compositions of Fr. Angel. The Choir was made up of the aspirants from the Prenovitiate and the postnovices in Canlubang, and the Savio Yuppies Choir from Saint Dominic Savio Parish. The motto of the newly-ordained was "subtuum praesidium" taken from the oldest Marian Prayer to the Mother of God.

A final note: Fr Vaclav Klement, Councillor for the Missions and former Regional for EAO, is celebrating 25 years of priestly ordination in these days. He is one of three members of the General Council celebrating a Silver Jubilee. Fr Maria Kanaga (Regional for South Asia) was ordained at the same time as Fr Klement. Fr Guillerme Basañes, Regional for Africa-Madagascar, is celebrating 25 years of Perpetual Profession. The three of them presided at the Community Mass at the Pisana on Pentecost Sunday morning, in the presence of the Rector Major, General Councillors, and Provincials attending the introductory course for new provincials in the days leading up to the Rector Major's Feastday on 24 June.
