Savio Haus Aspirants visit Prison
October 29, 2018
Port Morsby, PNG, 28 October 2018 -- The Salesian Aspirants and "Come and See" candidates went to the Juvenile inmates at Bomana on 28th October, 2018. It was an occasion to put into practice the World Mission Sunday of Pope Francis: "Bearing witness to Love". This was the result of reflecting on ‘charitable services to serve the least of our brothers and sisters’ (Mt. 25:40).
Together with Fr. Dominic Kachira sdb, the Rector of Savio Haus, the aspirants and candidates planned and executed a simple act of kindness. In preparation for the event, we collected used clothes from neighbouring seminarians in the Catholic Theological Institute, Bomana. Toilet articles like soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes were donated by the Savio Haus Community. But the most important gift was the "Word of God".
After our security check we made our way to the Juvenile wing where the inmates had prepared a welcome for us. Loneliness, rejection, Low self-esteem and discouragement was evident on the faces of the young men. They spoke in shy, low tones. Our action song, "Father Abraham" broke the ice and all relaxed and mingled with each other.
The highlight of the visit was the bible sharing on the story of Bartimeus the blind man. It was his faith that made him well. This is what inspired the inmates with Hope.
Peter Kamara, an aspirant, addressed the inmates. “You are here with your entire life ahead of you. Don’t let the bars lock you in. You may be forgotten by your family and friends, but God will not forget you”, he told them. “God cares and loves you unconditionally. Whatever the reason, this has to be your turning point, as God want you to have a better future”.
Words of gratitude were expressed by the inmates. “Your visit here has made us feel that God loves”, said one inmate.
The program was organized by the missionary group of the second year college aspirants.
The Lord is present in the marginalized and listens to the prayer of those who turn to Him in Faith.
