Salesian Lexicon: the user may now
contribute directly and search more easily
ROME: 15th April '04 -- It seems
appropriate to bring the attention of readers of 'austraLasia' to the improvements made in 'Lexisdb', a Salesian lexicon which offers words and
phrases common in Salesian discourse in both English and
Italian.
Two major improvements can be noted: (1) the search
facility allows for a wildcard search, therefore avoiding the need for an exact
search string; (2) the user may now contribute to the lexicon, by offering
new information, by adding to existing information or correcting existing
information.
Information contributed goes to a separate database from
which it can be transferred to the main database. The contributor could,
if he or she wished, also remind the lexicographer of the contribution by
sending an email, in which case a personal acknowledgement will be
offered.
There are over 300 items in the
lexicon; information is added daily. The most immediate and practical
use for Lexisdb is as a
bilingual dictionary, but as a wider user group contributes material, it can
serve as a source of understanding of our Salesian discourse - where it
comes from, how it is changing, and also a yardstick for determining that set of
concepts which would make up a Salesian termbase.
The eventual aim of the project is to make this lexicon
available in Spanish, French and Portuguese, in addition to English and
Italian.
