Five nations line up for ministries of Acolyte, Reader
MANILA: 17th September 2008 -- Five nations lined up for the
installation to the ministries of Acolyte, Reader at Seminaryo ng Don
Bosco at Parañaque, near Manila, on the evening of 15th
September. Twenty three candidates in all, they came from India,
Vietnam, Timor, Indonesia, the Philippines. Twelve were installed
as Acolytes and eleven as Readers. Fr Eligio Cruz, provincial of
the Philippines North province in which the seminary is located,
presided. He was joined by other concelebrants including the rector of
the postnovitiate community. Fr Eli, in his homily, challenged
those accepting their new ministries to give their 'all' to Jesus, not
what is extra, not by halves, as they strive to become like the One
they serve.
As one of the new Readers put it: "Promotions like
these - let's call them transitions too - prove that the Salesian
vocation is alive in this part of the world, and that there are signs
that many are still willing to give their lives 'for the life of the
world' ".
This situation is repeated around various other
parts of the Salesian world where the academic year begins in
September. A brief contact with another international seminary
yesterday, Ratisbonne in Jerusalem, reveals similar vitality as
students return from various parts of the world. They are
welcoming a further seven new first year students from other provinces.
