Mary and the martyrs - Indonesia remembers
JAKARTA: 25th February 2007 -- A clash between the 1st Sunday of Lent and the
Feast of the two Salesian proto-martyrs of China, Sts Louis Versiglia and
Callistus Caravario, meant that the latter feast was dropped, liturgically
speaking, this year. But the 25th February feast, and the preceding
memorial of the 24th of the month for Mary Help of Christians, were given due
recognition in ITM province in another way - the publication of two booklets
just translated into Bahasa Indonesia, by Fr Peter Tukan sdb.
Don Bosco's Madonna, and a Short Biography of
the two martyrs, were originally written by Fr Philip Pascucci, from the Easter
USA Province. They were distributed to parishioners attending masses in
Salesian parishes in Indonesia on 24th February.
St Callistus Caravario is closely related to ITM Province.
He spent some time in Dili before his ordination to the priesthood in China in
1929. The ITM Province is named after this Saint.
While still on the discussion of liturgical calendars, here
is a point most have missed: Joseph Kowalski and the five young oratorians
(Poznan) - in actual fact these are two separate celebrations in the Salesian
calendar, Kowalski being 29th May and The Five being 12th June. It means
a minor re-write of the hard work recently achieved by the willing band of
translators! We've all somehow, but mistakenly, grouped the Polish
martyrs together.
