In the land of the unexpected......
ARAIMIRI (Gulf Province, PNG): 7th February
2007 -- Last Sunday, 4th February,
four staff homes at Don Bosco Araimiri, Kerema, Gulf Province, were burned to the
ground. The backdrop of the Rotary Hall with its beautiful painting of
Don Bosco's dream by Bro Anthony Hopida twenty years ago was also burned.
Fortunately nobody was injured in the conflagration. Since it is just the
beginning of the school year in PNG, all students were in their rooms at the
time. Using buckets and pails, the students, Salesians and staff did their best
to extinguish the fire which broke out around 2 am. According to information
provided, a short circuit in one of the staff houses was the cause of the fire.
On Monday night, rascals entered the
residence of the Salesians in Lariau, Gulf Province, and stole many of their
belongings such as TVs, clothes, school supplies, food. The rascals tied
up the two guards. The Salesians were not home since they were out on
their usual rounds amongst the mission stations.
GLOSSARY
rascals: a term used only in PNG for gangs of young people
(usually young but not always) who go on rampages of pillage and worse.
