Another
Jerusalem 'twelve': Diaconate
JERUSALEM: 9th June 2008 -- Yesterday morning, Sunday 8th
June, twelve young Salesians were ordained to the diaconate in the
Basilica of St. Anne's in Jerusalem's Old City. The Coadjutor of
the Latin Patriarch, soon to become the actual Patriarch (his
predecessor has already announced his retirement), the Rt. Rev Bishop
Fouad Twal, was the ordaining prelate.
The Twelve hail from Indonesia (1)), India (4), Sri Lanka (2), Ethiopia
(3), Tanzania (1), Poland (1).
Deacon Andi Wibowo, from ITM, will be spending
exercising his ministry in the UK, at least for the summer period,
before classes resume in September. Some will return to their
home country for the same period. Deacon Karol Kulpa, from
Poland, will begin his ministry in the US.
The St Anne's Basilica, reputed to stand on the spot
where Joachim and Anne, Mary's parents, lived, is one of the most
beautiful churches in the Old City. It is administered by the
Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) whose students attend the Studium
Theologicum Salesianum at Ratisbonne. St. Anne's is a fully
preserved and restored reminder of Crusader times, handed over to
Napoleon III by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Majid in gratitude for
assistance during the Crimean War. It had been in Muslim hands
from the time Jerusalem was conquered by Saladin.
One other member of the EAO Region was present for
the ordination. Fr Frank Bertagnolli is completing a course at Ecce
Homo just five minutes along the 'Via Dolorosa' from St Anne's.
