Some
follow-up items - and Catholicos Kareken II, Supreme Patriarch of all
Armenians!
JERUSALEM: 9th May 2008 -- Just to ensure that the correct
facts are recorded with regard to Mongolia's recent sdb history: Fr
Vecchi, Rector Major at the time, asked Fr Luciano Odorico, then
Councillor for the Missions, to visit Mongolia and see the
possibilities of a presence. From there on the rest of the information
as recorded yesterday makes sense, including the visit from the then
Provincial of KOR etc. etc.
News is trickling in from Myanmar, but does not
essentially alter earlier information. Damages to the location
then mentioned appear to have been loss of roofing, meaning bedrooms
were exposed to the elements with obvious consequences. Various
agricultural projects which help raise funds locally were destroyed,
leaving them without that important means of support. But further
details are hard to come by.
ECUMENISM AND ARMENIA
You may have noticed in yesterday's ANS news
that The UPS gave a doctorate 'Honoris Causa' yesterday to the supreme
patriarch of all Armenians, His Holiness, the Orthodox supreme
patriarch of all Armenians, Karekin II. In his response, His
Holiness thanked ' the
Catholic Church for its contribution to the formation of
young Armenian priests giving them the opportunity to pursue their
education in institutions of higher education'.
It is interesting to note that while this was
happening in Rome, quite an extraordinary ecumenical gesture when you
think about it, Salesian and Armenian seminarians were battling it out
(read = helping one another to pursue education in institutions of
higher education!) on a football field in the Old City of
Jerusalem. The Armenians lost 6-4! 'Friendlies' of this
kind are an occasional happening in the Holy City, especially now that
the Salesian seminary is located in New Jerusalem. The Armenians
are amongst the friendliest in the ecumenical scene in Jerusalem.
