FMA: First Private Elementary
School in Phnom Penh
PHNOM PENH: 28th June 2005 -- It was 8.20
a.m. June 17, when villagers around Don Bosco District were in
a spirit of celebration. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians were
inaugurating the first private elementary school run by a Religious
Congregation in Cambodia at Phum Chreh Village in Phnom Penh .
Attended by H. E. Em Sethy, the Secretary of the
Ministry of
Education, Youth and sports, H.E. Mann Chhuen, Deputy Governor of
Phnom Penh, H.E. Khleang Huot, District officer of Russey Keo,
benefactors from Italy and Japan, friends and parents of the students,
the official opening happened amidst cheers and hopes that this
school will provide quality education to many children of the area in
line with the FMA’s vision of “a peaceful and developed Cambodia
where poor youth receive quality education”. When Salesian
educators look at these children, they cannot but hope for a
better future for them through education.
The keynote
speech of H.E. Em Sethy underlined the importance of the Don Bosco
Foundation in the field
of education particularly the skills training by its
technical and vocational centres where the young are empowered to
find their rightful place in society, earn a decent means of
livelihood and be productive, honest and active citizens. It was a
public speech honoring the role of Don Bosco on the theme “Don
Bosco effective partner in the human development of Cambodia".
