CSM: 10th anniversary of PNG's first ever Girl's
Technical College
PORT MORESBY: 7th June 2005 -- The Feast of the Sacred Heart is
the patronal feast for the Caritas Sisters of Miyazaki. Located
in East Boroko, adjacent to the Don Bosco Technical College, Caritas
Secondary Girls' Technical College has the privilege of being Papua New
Guinea's first ever techncial school for girls. And the Salesian
Family is proud of the fact!
On the Solemnity of the Feast of the Sacred Heart
this year, the tenth anniversary of CSGTC was celebrated, in the first
instance with a Eucharistic liturgy presided over by the Apostolic
Nuncio to PNG/SI, Archbishop Yllana Adolfo Tito, accompanied by Fr Alex
Garces SDB.
The student population of 700 plus girls, from
grades 7-12 (the full secondary range of classes in the PNG system)
were in attendance and played their part in the various liturgical
movements of the celebration, including a local dance as an
accompaniment to the Offertory. The Nuncio focused in his homily
on the meaning of 'caritas' and the role the school has played in
evangelisation in the PNG context.
Sr. Stella Ahn, now CSM General Councillor for the
Missions, and first principal of the school, spoke inspirationally at
the academy which followed. This was attended by the neighbouring
SDB community. There was also a memorial exhibition of the
students' work. The day included a sports carnival and other
events.
On the following day, the 4th, Parents and Past
Students celebrated the anniversary, holding an Oratory (as in speech!)
competition and a Miss Caritas event, well attended and watched on
either side of the fence which, recall, marks out the the neighbouring
SDB College territory!
One of those who had 'crossed the fence' in all the
right ways was Miss Majuna, a foundation student in Year 7 in
1995. After her Year 12 graduation in 2000 she went on to the DB
College which is co-educational, for further studies and graduated in
2004 in Computer Science. She is now at Caritas, teaching her
younger sisters!
