India: "Salesian presence is a miracle", says
RM
KOLKATA: 24th February 2005 -- "The Salesian presence in
India is a miracle”, said the Rector Major in his opening remark for the Good
Night talk in the context of the centenary of the Salesian presence in India. As
the Italian missionaries came to India and spread Don Bosco’s charism in India
and are present today n 128 countries, so too Indian salesians need to take up
this historic responsibility and develop a missionary dimension of our salesian
life,” the Rector Major said.
He had only just arrived in India, after a brief stop-over in
Mumbai (Bombay) and an unscheduled but in-character visit to one of Kolkota
Province's prominent works for street children, Ashalayam.
Besides calling on the confreres to a
“god-centered life and fraternal communion, he exhorted them “to give the most
to those who have the least.”
“The problem of India,” the Rector Major
added, “is not poverty, but culture.”
“And our option for the poor, means to help
transformation of culture,” explained the Rector Major spelling out the purpose
of Salesian education as formation in human values, preparation of professional
and socially committed citizens."
