Singapore Youth Expedition Project giving a helping hand
in Phnom Penh
PHNOM PENH: 21st December 2007 -- Volunteer 'fever' is a
tradition with the Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia's many services,
offering young and old special moments in a meaningful way with the
poor, the orphaned and the marginalised. In fact, Don Bosco's
work in this part of the world began with volunteers from a Past
Pupil's Assoication from Bangkok. Since then the tradition of
welcoming short term or long term volunteers has continued.
Don Bosco has been hosting service learning and
community engagement activities with 29 youth volunteers from
Singapore's Technical education College West, Life skills Department,
from 6-19 December. The venture is called Youth Expedition
Project. Activities included painting classrooms, interior designing,
mural painting, functional English arts and craft works, cultural
visits and shows. These services lead to community engagement
such as community living, group and teamwork, social familiarisation,
and English language camp and a visit to one of the Wonders of the
world, Angkor Wat, as well as the Killing Fields.
The Youth Volunteers were from Muslim, Buddhist and
Christian faith backgrounds, and they experienced interfaith harmony as
part of cultural and educational development and Don Bosco's
characteristic 'family spirit'. _________________
