MANILA: 12th August 2009 --
The Federation of Asian Bishops Conference (FABC) meeting, now in
progress in Manila, was the topic of a recent austraLasia. We now
know that besides Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil, there are other
Salesian bishops from Asia who are around for the Conference.
Fr Eli Cruz, Provincial of Philippines North (FIN)
Province, puts it this way: "I was able to whisk off Cardinal Joseph
Zen through the whispering of Fr. Savio Hon Tai Fai, sdb (present as
"peritus")", from his busy schedule for a
conference with the students of theology in Paranaque yesterday
evening, Tuesday in Manila. The cardinal
gave a talk on China not only to the students of theology; the nearby
community of professors also came, likewise the post-novitiate brothers
and the postulants. Fr. Andy Wong was also present, together with the
two Salesians in the International Theological Commission, Fr. Savio
Hon Tai Fai and Fr. Francis Gustilo. Bishop Leo Drona, sdb, bishop of
San Pablo in the Philippines, drove for two hours to meet Cardinal Zen,
his contemporary during their student years in Hong Kong.
On the vigil of the Assumption, Archbishop Thomas
Menamparampil will "slip out "of the bishops' gathering to say the Mass
for the students of theology in Paranaque. Both visits of these
esteemed Salesian prelates will hopefully inspire the younger confreres
to greater love of the Church and strengthen their inter-cultural
formation as directed by GC26 - "Educate confreres in initial formation
to a missionary sensitivity and to dialogue with different cultural and
religious traditions" (GC 26, 49). Salesians studying in the Centre of
Studies in Manila are themselves multi-cultural, coming from FIN and
FIS, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Timor, Thailand, China, Vietnam,
Myanmar, Korea, India, and Sri Lanka.
Other Salesian prelates in Manila for the FABC
meeting are Archbishop Charles Maung Bo of Yangoon, Myanmar, Archbishop
Chinnappa Malayappan of Chennai, India, Bishop Patrick Buzon of
Kabankalan, Philippines, Bishop Pierre Nguyen Van De of Xuan, Truong,
Vietnam. Also present is a FMA professor from Rome, from China, Sr.
