Australian Salesian Brother honoured with the 'Order of Australia' Medal

SYDNEY: 15th June '04 -- One of the Australian Province's oldest and most loved Brothers, Bro. James Hamilton, has been honoured by the Australian Government with its premier civilian award the Order of Australia.  As well as the 'Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco' SDB, Brother James can now proudly attach OAM to his name!  A part of the citation reads thus:
"For service to the education and welfare of young people at Boys' Town and in the community of Engadine as a member of the Order of Salesians of Don Bosco. Brother Hamilton has served as a Member of the Salesians of Don Bosco ( an international organisation of religious men and women and lay people working in the field of education, welfare and human development programs), since 1937. He lived and served at Boys' Town, Engadine, 1954-1998 as Educator, Sportsmaster, Promoter/fundraiser, Religious duties and general and maintenance duties. Boys' Town was founded by Father Tom Dunlea in 1939. He worked with homeless and difficult boys and gave them 'the opportunities they did not have'.

It is also worthy of note, given the recent sixtieth anniversary of D-Day in Europe, that at the time as a young Salesian studying in France, Bro James had to find his way single-handed through enemy lines and eventually to freedom in England.  These days Brother James, still based in Engadine-Heathcote, runs a solid and consistent prayer campaign throughout the Province, reminding confreres of the need for a personal Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament to pray for vocations.
