ORANGE (New Jersey USA) June 11, 2014
-- Seventeen
Salesian
Missionaries from fourteen provinces, one delegation, and one
missionary diocese gathered at the Don Bosco Residence (NJ)
for a day
of orientation in preparation for their summer assignments to
preach on
behalf of Salesian Missions in 109 parishes located in
thirty-eight
dioceses/archdioceses in the United States.
During the next eight weeks the members of this year’s mission
band
will tell the stories of Salesian Mission Work in provinces of
The
Antilles, Africa East, South Africa, Zambia, Sudan, Central
America,
Sri Lanka, The Philippines, India (Bangalore, Bombay, Dimapur,
Guwahati, Hyderabad, Madras, New Delhi, Tiruchy) and in the
Syro-Malabar Diocese of Thuckulay in India represented by
Salesian
Bishop George Rajendran.
Four confreres from the United States will also help with the
appeals:
one from the Eastern Province and three from the Western
Province.
This annual program of the Church and the Society of the
Propagation of
the Faith in the United States has a two fold purpose. First,
the many
mission congregations, lay organizations and mission dioceses
get a
chance to personally appeal for prayer and financial support
from
Catholics of the U.S. Secondly, U.S. Catholics get the
opportunity to be educated about what is happening in mission
fields
today.
MCP preaching emphasizes solidarity and understanding of
situations
that make life so difficult for so many people and calls to
action on
behalf of the one human family. This preaching helps to
overcome
the divisions in this world, to bind those who have more to
the poor,
and to make the free zealous for the rights of the oppressed.
It drives
the comfortable and secure to take risks for the victims of
tyranny and
war. (cfr. US Catholic Bishops’ statement, “Called to Global
Solidarity: International Challenges for U.S. Parishes.”
