5624(IV)_Jakarta Salesians Turn Trash to a Blessing
By Fr. Ambrosius Widiyantoro, SDB
Wisma Salesian Don Bosco, Jakarta, 7 June 2021 -- Garbage is often a problem that never ends. Improper processing and public awareness play a big role in many places; the postnovitiate community of Wisma Salesian Don Bosco, Jakarta, is no exception.
Brother Yulius Nuwa Owa has the drive to invite and often remind all the members of the postnovitiate community to participate in processing waste or organic waste into something useful, both for the environment and for the society at large. Through a series of easy and simple processes, the utilization of organic waste is processed to produce fertilizer that is useful for the community garden.
Brother Yulius said that waste management is an obligation or responsibility of everyone and not only of the environmental commission. “The processing and utilization of waste is one way in making the various types of plants, vegetables, and fruits, to be healthy and fruitful” said Brother Yulius.
Brother and the confreres of the postnovitiate community are daily sorting out organic and inorganic wastes. The organic fertilizer produced are proven to be certainly effective.
The vegetables produced are consumed by the post novitiate community and are also shared with the people in need.
This activity is wonderful and in line with the 8th challenge in the Post-Chapter Reflection after the GC28. In addition, it serves as an example for other communities in the province of SDB-INA.
Meanwhile, according to Agnes and Yeni, our postnovitiate cooks, “the program is very beneficial for the community's economy since it can reduce the usual monthly expenses for food. In addition, it reduces mobility to go to public markets in order to buy vegetables so as to prevent frequent exposure to the Covid-19 virus”.
