Salesian Day in Vietnam
HO CHI MINH: 30th January 2008
--
Today,
the province of Vietnam held its annual Salesian Day. There were about
700 hundred people gathered for the event which was also one week
before the Lunar New Year Celebration. Most of the SDB's were present,
together with 30 FMA's and many Co-operators, past-pupils. The key
speech
was delivered by Fr. John Ty, the former provincial and also
ex-missionary of Mongolia. He drew his listeners' attention with his
insightful comments on the Rector Major's Strenna. The theme was also
acted out with dances and songs by different groups, novices,
post-novices and FMA's. The Co-operators concluded the stage program
with their well-wishes for the Lunar New Year.
The
Eucharistic celebration was the peak moment of the day. The whole
congregation was touched by the sending-out ritual for a lay man who
volunteered to go to Mongolia as a lay missionary. This was the first
time the province of Vietnam has a layperson as a missionary. Fr. John Baptist Them, the provincial, expressed his
hope that there would be more and more lay people for mission
ad gentes.
