Advent special! New Liturgical Year, New
residence for the Community of Sumba, Indonesia
SUMBA: 28th November 2005 -- The community of
Waitebula-Sumba (Indonesia) which looks
after a carpentry skills training centre has begun moving out to a
new location: a village named Waipengali. The community consists of 3
Salesians and 20 trainee-boarders; it is animated by Fr. Yohannes Laba
Tolok sdb. Until yesterday, the Salesians and boarders were staying in
the old carpentry school owned by the diocese near the cathedral. The
new liturgical year is indeed a propitious occasion to begin residing
in the 10 hectare land leased out to the Salesians by the Sumba
diocese. The new site in Waipengali is just 7 kilometres away from the
former residence. The original plan is to construct some buildings that
would serve as Novitiate, Skills Training Centre and
Oratory-Recreational center for the youth of Sumba. So far the ITM
province has been helped by the Rector Major and other benefactors in
constructing the four buildings which are now able to accommodate the
novices. Later, other buildings will be constructed for the Training
Centre, boarders and Oratory. This first week of Advent is permeated by
a spirit of excitement and expectation as the Salesians, instructors
and boarders of Waipengali prepare the new buildings for the arrival of
11 novices who wull transfer from Tigaraksa to Waipengali.
