AUSTRALIA DAY : SALESIAN PAST
PUPIL-COOPERATOR GAINS NATIONAL AWARD
MELBOURNE: 26th January
'04 -- Australia's highest civic awards, the
Australia Day Awards, announced today in Canberra, included Melbourne member of
the Judiciary, His Honour Judge Frank Walsh QC. Judge Walsh was awarded
the second degree of the three-tiered structure, Member in the General Dvision
(AM) 'for services to the judiciary and the administration of justice in
Victoria and to the community through a range of Church, social support, youth
and supporting organisations'. Judge Walsh has been a leading member of
the Don Bosco Youth Foundation Brunswick (he is a past Pupil from the early days
of Don Bosco Brunswick) and has been known for the public way he sees his
work especially in juvenile justice, stemming from Salesian
principles.
Also awarded Member in the General Division was Fr.
Austin Cooper OMI, one of Australia's best known and loved academics in the
theological field. He has taught generations of Salesian seminarians
through Catholic College and the Melbourne College of Divinity. His award
citation reads 'for services to education and scholarly participation through
the Melbourne College of Divinity and to the community through the Oblates of
Mary Immaculate'.
