DB Day around the region

PAKKRED (THA): 30th January 2009 --  'Gratitude Day' they call it, at the conclusion of the Novena to St John Bosco. All the blind students at the Skills Develpment Centre for the Blind gathered to pray and sing in honour of Don Bosco and listen to Fr John Somchart read some significant pages from Don Bosco's life followed by a commentary by Fr Charles Velardo. The afternoon was dedicated, in truly Salesian fashion, to sports activities. Athletes from the Centre have recently participated in the national games for the disabled where they took out 12 Gold, 15 Silver and 10 Bronze in Track and Field, Judo, Swimming and Goalball. Earlier, Fr Charles tells us, on 19th December, the blind cyclists joined the Tour de Thailand for 100 kilometres.  Now everyone is looking forward to the opening in March of the Don Bosco Sprots Centre for the Blind at Pakkred.

SUVA-Fiji (AUL): 31st January 2009 -- In the tiny chapel at Don Bosco House Suva (Pinardi Shed re-visited?) five young men made their first profession intot he hands of the Provincial, Fr Frank Moloney. They were accompanied by many young religious who helped liven up the liturgy with the usual wonderful Pacific singing and celebration.  Suva is the centre for an inter-novitiate programme.
The newly professed offer a cross-section of this huge province: Bros Tuia Fagalilo Tuia, Lolesio Masoe and Samele Mika are from Samoa, Bro. Tevita Nuku Luve Lefai is from the Kingdom of Tonga (the second Tongan Salesian), and Bro Barry Parker from Australia.
The Australia-Pacific Province, now firmly committed to formation and mission in Fiji was glad to wlecome into the community celebration the new Rector of the Pacific Regional Seminary, Fr Michael O'Connor SM, a former Marist provincial for the region.

PORT MORESBY (PNG/SI Delegation): 31st January 2009 -- Brother Pedro Sachitula, the first Angolan missionary in Oceania, and doing his practical training at Araimiri, was in Port Moresby for the first profession of two novices from PNG. They did their novitiate at Kumgi-Kundiawa in Simbu province in the highlands. Pedro's comments were that these professions are "evident sign that God continues to bless and call our Congregation to carry out and fulfill its mission".

CANLUBANG (FIN): 31st January 2009 -- Various members of the Post Novitiate community wrote to describe what they were doing for the Feast Day.  They gathered young people in the evening for a live webcast concert, with front acts provided by young people from nearby schools and universities. The webcast was available from the Canlubang web site, Signs and Bearers (http://dbcanlubang.info ) where you can also find other photos of the foundation day celebration.

ROME: (RMG) 31st January 2009 -- 'Hacking the Way to Heaven' was finally published and can be found at  http://www.lulu.com/content/5912363. In his preliminary blurb, Michel Bauwens, founder of the P2P Foundation has this to say: "...Today the Church is facing a new participatory challenge and promise, through the digital technologies that empower self-aggregation, autonomous organisation and peer to peer learning, outside established channels. The Salesian Congregation, known for its global network of 'Don Bosco' schools, is in the vanguard, not only of social issues, but also in its encounter with the new open technologies that have an impact on the youth it is reaching.....". While you may wish to pay for a shiny, colourfully-covered printed version at €11.90, you may also be attracted by the €0.00 download version, and the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 licence which gives you full freedom to quote the contents liberally and adjust them as you wish, so long as you acknowledge the original author.
