Another step on the 150th - from an unlikely source
SYDNEY: 30th March 2009 -- While a major Catholic weekly (indeed
it is called 'The Catholic Weekly') is hardly an unlikely source for
news about saints, it was, one has to admit, a surprise to open
Sydney's Catholic Weekly for the last week in March to find
Michael Rua explicitly nominated as 'Saint of the week' - looking
forward a few days to April 6th. And it was even more intriguing to see
the acknowledgement at the bottom of the article:
www.salesians.org.uk. Well done guys!
But there it was: Don Rua, the Living Rule,
Feastday April 6th, Saint of the Day. We probably would have
overlooked this one, not that it is the 'feast day' we Salesians
celebrate. Instead we do that on October 29, but let's not knock back a
good thing when it comes our way. In true Catholic tradition, and the Catholic
Weekly would adhere to such, as it is a voice for Sydney's
well-known Cardinal Pell, the Rua 'feast day' is the day of his entry
into paradise, which was 99 years ago on 6th April. The article, quoted
in full from the UK website but in the new context of 'Saint of the
Day' will certainly lead Sydney Catholics to know something of this
wonderful Salesian and probably also lead them to believe he is a
full-blown saint. We won't be disappointed about that.
There is little point in quoting extensively from
the item here. You can trace it yourself by going to
www.salesians.org.uk and picking the 'Saints' tag, then Blessed Michael
Rua. The Catholic Weekly has also taken the photo, the one with
just a hint of a smile. Pity, since readers would know that we
now could have offered them one depicting considerable mirth.
Maybe we should include this as another step,
another reminder, in the 150th, though no doubt it will be picked up
again in late October. A bit like life at the Pisana where some can
manage to celebrate both birthday and 'onomastico'.
