Preventive System and
Human Rights: trust, hope, alliance
ROME: 3rd January 2009 -- With a significant presence from the
East
Asia-Oceania and South Asia Regions, in excess of 40 people between the
two regions, the long-prepared VIS (International Volunteers for
Development) Congress on the Preventive System and Human Rights is
underway in Rome. It is very well attended, full to the brim in
fact.
The important thing for readers to note is that they
can follow the
proceedings and some of the more interesting addresses with ease via
both ANS and sdb.org - the latter offers a link also to the VIS
website where you can pick up the material from the Congress. And
SDL
is also preserving the material long-term, so as each day concludes you
can check on material of interest through that channel as well.
One of the exceptional presentations so far has been
by Fr Jean-Marie Petitclerc of France. Jean-Marie is an expert in
both the Preventive System and Human Rights by whatever measure you
wish to apply. As a Salesian working directly with the difficult
situations in suburbs (the word 'banlieu' has become well known
worldwide for all the wrong reasons due to the French experience of
recent times) he has founded the Valdocco Association in both Paris and
Lyon. The work and its positive results soon became obvious to
Government, and he works as a consultant to the Ministry for Housing
and the Cities in the current French Government.
His Congress address (The most significant values of
the Preventive System) would be usable in many contexts. You can find
it on the SDL English collection by searching under Petitclerc under
'Author'. Jean Marie reminds his listeners-readers that Don
Bosco, visiting Paris in 1883, told people there "If you don't take
care of young people now, they will soon keep you very busy". Prophetic
words for today's France, but not only. He points out that what
characterises today's youth, as in Don Bosco's time, are their lack of
trust towards adults, their anxiety for the future, and the
difficulties they experience in the process of socialisation, and then
offers Salesian pedagogy as represented by the Preventive System, as a
response: a pedagogy of trust, hope and alliance.
The congress will conclude on 6th January. _________________ AustraLasia is an
