Lima, Peru, 8 December 2018 -- Two Salesian Vietnamese missionaries were ordained to the priesthood on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, in Lima, Peru by Cardinal Pedro Barreto, SJ of Huancayo (Peru) - Fr Peter Nguyen Huu Tien and Fr Paul Tran Bao Thang.
The joy of the newly ordained Salesian priests was shared by the PER provincial superior Fr Manuel Cayo (from Argentina), another 40 Salesian priests including also the former Vietnam-Mongolia Provincial, Fr John Baptist Nguyen Van Them, and many young people, along with a few family members of the two Vietnamese missionaries.
In his homily, Card. Barreto highlighted the themes of hope, gratitude and apostolic commitment, taking inspiration from the Scripture readings. At the end of the Eucharist the two newly-ordained missionary priests offered their thanksgiving to their own families, all the Salesians who accompanied them on their vocation journey in Vietnam and in the Latin American missions and formation. Many Vietnamese Salesian Family members and relatives of the two missionaries were able to follow the ordination Eucharist through live broadcasting via FB live. At the end of the Mass on behalf of the Vietnamese community, a small group sang the hymn of Tan Tung Hong An as a hymn of gratitude for the great things God is doing through His chosen people.
The Vietnamese missionary ordinations continue: another Vietnamese missionary, Peter Nguyen Anh Tuan will be ordained priest in Paraguay (Apostolic Vicariate of Chaco Paraguay, Puerto Casado) on 15 December.
