Port Moresby, PNG, 27 April 2017 -- The Youth Blood Drive Corporation, a programme initiated by the Port Moresby General Hospital, does mobile runs and visits a lot of schools and companies around Port Moresby to collect blood from students and staff. The blood donation runs from April 24-27 at the PCTA Park of DBTS. The organisation promotes healthy blood and accumulates them from donors who are healthy.
The YBDC collect more or less 20 blood bags each day in small companies, but in bigger institutions or organisations like DBTS, they gather 50 to 100 blood bags each day. The blood is shared to the other hospitals only in Port Moresby.
George Anthony a Nursing Officer from the Blood Corp said, "Our aim is to obtain at least 50 healthy blood bags each day. The blood we receive from the donors undergo tests in the hospital, then it is imparted to patients in the hospital like, mothers who are in labour and have loss of blood. The blood is given to them before and after giving birth. This is given to patients to help maintain the flow of blood within them."
"For DBTS we have been collecting blood since the 24-27 of April and we are glad that they have given 248 blood bags, which are 171 accepted and 77 rejected. Thank you DBTS again for the most number of blood bags."
"Physically I feel dizzy and numb but mentally I helped saved a life. Personallyon my own experience, my auntywas pregnant and her blood pressure was low then she was aided by a blood donor. That act moved me and she told me that if I give blood I help save a lot of pregnant women. So the first time I’ve given blood was in grade 9 and this is my second," said Sean Bundu, a grade 11 pupil.
A lot of Bosconians and staff volunteered to help save a life when the Youth Blood Drive Corp commenced with their programme. With the highest number of blood donated DBTS still remains the best of the YBDC.
A message from George Anthony. "Remember that donating blood is good, because when you give it is a +1 meaning when you give, you save a life. When you give healthy blood you save a life and you help yourself to be healthy also. You have to be physically active and not just being lazy; eat lots of good food and drink a lot of water all the time."
