Good Friday Way of the Cross
April 19, 2019
Talisay City, the Philippines, 19 April 2019 -- About 600 faithful gathered in the early morning (5 AM) of 19 April (Good Friday) at the Don Bosco Formation Center in Lawaan, Talisay City (Rector F. Mel Racelis) for the traditional Good Friday Way of the Cross. 60 youth of the Don Bosco Youth Center in Lawaan (in charge Fr. Rosmon) practised for the past one month to enact the Passion of Jesus in 14 stations in a lively and dignified way. Walking almost the same distance as Jesus in Jerusalem, they started in the MHC Garden of the Formation house and ended on the top of the Sacred Heart Hill near the Don Bosco Retreat House. Year by year thanks to the excellent preparation more and more youth, families and senior faithful are taking part in this devotion.
From Samoa, through the different Pacific countries, through the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Pakistan until the Colosseum in Rome, millions of Catholics are taking part in the Way of the Cross. It is a memory of suffering Jesus intertwined with the suffering of today's people in many different ways. The meditations of the 14 stations are prepared in so many different versions, but help us to keep our hearts and minds fixed on Jesus, who is giving His life for our sake - yesterday, today and forever.
Late in the evening today at Rome's Colosseum the traditional Way of the Cross will be led by Pope Francis, this year with the mediation written by Sr. Eugenia Bonetti (Consolata Congregation). It will bring attention to the victims of human trafficking, refugees and migrants suffering indifference and pain from Africa to Europe, dying in the Sahara desert, in the Mediterranean Sea. Today meditations help us to meet Jesus alive in our suffering brothers and sisters.
