discuss vocations: a vocations slant also on Sydney WYD
PARAÑAQUE: 25th November 2008 -- The Salesian Youth
Animators and Leaders Assembly (SYALA) for Philippines North Province
gathered at Seminaryo ng Don Bosco on Saturday 22nd November for a full
day of vocations presentations and discussions. The event was managed
by the Provincial Vocations Delegate, Fr Gerry Martin and the Filipino
students at the theologate spearheaded the various committees for the
event. The theme, broadly translating the Filipino version, was Youth
Group Today....Tomorrow Vocations.
There were more than 200 participants, most but not
all from Salesian settings. Some came from other settings where the
students of theology help with weekend apostolates. The participants
included both young men and young women.
The event began with Mass. Talks and presentations
were held in the auditorium. Fr Joriz Calsa, former delegate for the
SYM in the Southern Philipinnes Province shared his experience of the
World Youth Day in Sydney and the challenges of Pope Benedict XVI to
young people today. Fr Marty Macasaet spoke of the challenges of
vocation ministry coming out of GC26. These presentations were were
capped by a lively Interview Panel involving Sr Rita, a youth leader in
Children's Ministry at the Salesian San Ildefonso Parish in Makati who
subsequently joined the Canossians, Fr Ding Cortez, now spiritual
moderator of DB Academy in Pampanga but a former young Knights of the
Altar member, and a married lay preacher, Rolan Bagting who is proud to
have Salesians as his spiritual directors.
The afternoon sessions were for sharing, with
facilitation from 21 aspirants from DB Canlubang, 4 students of
theology, 1 practical trainee and 2 lay women. Each group eventually
produced a commitment statement worded as a prayer, three of which were
shared with the whole assembly. The event concluded with a Good Night
from Fr Gerry Martin.
