Fastest
wheelchairs in Cambodia - 'Angkor Racer 2'!
PHNOM PENH: 27th May 2008 -- Sunday 25th May saw a race with a
difference, at Hun Hen Park, Phnom Penh. Thirty disabled athletes
(ten
of them women) hurtled down the 100 metre track in
their Angkor Racer 2 wheelchairs manufactured by Don Bosco Technical
School. Three winners received cash and trophies and the team
winner a special trophy designed from Val Sutherland's recycled arms
(firearms, that is! Cf # 2154).
The first Wheelie Grand Prix 2008 is fully supported
by DBTS Technical Department. The objective is to build Cambodia's only
wheelchair racing programme. The department has already manufactured
100 of the 'Angkor' variety. The Grand Prix was sponsored by the Royal
ANZ Bank Phom Penh.
The event also served to highlight another motive -
celebrations for Mary Help of Christians. May 24th is held as
'Foundation Day' for Salesians in Cambodia as that date in 1991 was the
day of the arrival of the first two Salesians to commence the Don Bosco
Mission in the country.
Off-track, then, celebrations were initiated by a
novena and solemnised on the 24th itself by the Promise of four new
Salesian Cooperators, a concelebrated Mass and a Marian procession,
attended by five hundred faithful, six priests and twenty religious.
