Mission
accomplished: Korean group completes visit to Cambodia
PHNOM PENH: 24th January 2008 -- Bro Bosco Park and
Professor Thomas Lee have recently led a group of 36 young people plus
16 doctors, nurses and medical interns to Cambodia as part of the
Korean Youth Volunteer organisation activity carried out by Korean
Salesians. This is the third such visit.
The group had two major objectives in mind: the
first was to give to others what Koreans themselves have experienced -
they are what they are now because of help from other countries. The
second was to learn new ways and lifestyles. They came to learn
from Cambodians about patience, hard work, cheerfulness in the midst of
difficulty and hardship.
While Cambodian local and volunteer Korean youth
worked side by side to renovate the library and Computer Centre at the
Don Bosco Technical School, repainting walls, refurbishing bookshelves,
rearranging and classifying books, updating internet access.....the
Malguyou Medical Team focused on health and wellness programs in three
provinces including Smokey Mountain and the slum area of Stueng
Meanchey Phnom Penh. Fifty Biddhist monks and school neighbours
also came along for a health check.
The unique activity was the World Aids Day (WAD
2008) which brought some 300 children and 50 youth facilitators
together for a one-day activity consisting of healthy games led
by the youth themselves, and medical checkups by the medical team.
The medical team travelled 300 kms to serve children
in the brick factories and paddy fields in Battambang province, to
bring health and wellness there too. A visit to the nearby brick
factories helped the medical team understand the causes of many of the
diseases and health problems being experienced.
Don Bosco Cambodia has been a privileged locus for
human and socio-cultural development of Korean youth. There they
have experienced evangelical values of sharing and caring for others,
communion and collaboration with other faiths and commitment to Don
Bosco's mission through love for the poor, especially children.
The period from 7-19 January will long be remembered as 'Mission
accomplished' through these values, Don Bosco's way.
