austraLasia #2041
Another
brief 'roundup' of items
ROME: 28th January 2008 -- With quite a number of news
'snippets' coming through these days, rather than let some of them
lapse due to the 'one news item a day' approach austraLasia usually
takes for the sanity of both readers and its coordinator, let me round
up a handful that have come in most recently:
BERKELEY (SUO): 25th January 2008, -- Arthur J.
Lenti, SDB,
author of the seven volume work, "Don Bosco History and
Spirit," was given a Doctoral Degree ,Honoris Causa, bestowed by
Rev. Michael, Sweeney, O.P., President of the Dominican School of
Philosophy and Theology at Berkeley. This award was given in
recognition
of the outstanding contribution of his scholarly work on the life of
Don Bosco and his many years of service to the Church and the Salesian
Society as an educator and writer. Throughout the EAO Region, conferes
and members of the Salesian Family generally have been able to benefit
from Fr Lenti's work, either directly as students of his at the ISS
Berkeley, or most recently through the two volumes now published.
HCM VIE: Mekong
Delta, Vietnam 24th
January 2008 -- Opening of the new canonical community at Can
Gio, amongst the poorest of the poor. A true 'mission work' at home for
the VIE Province. Can Gio is still technically within HCM City
but about three hours fromt he Provincial House by motorbike and boat.
TIGARAKSA (ITM), Indonesia, 25th January --
Aspirants, pre-novices and post-novices were treated to 'open
house' at the local TV station. They were able to enter the
different studios where film-making equipment and props were set up.
They witnessed an 'on-air' noonday news presentation. There was time
too for an exchange of ideas and a question and answer session.
Knowing the visitors were fromt he Salesians - known for their
educational apostolate - a member of the TV production team confessed
that many of their finished products were really not educational, but
more in the form of popular entertainment and sensational
presentation. They were at times, he said, pressured to come up
quickly with a TV program which resulted in high ratings amongst
viewers and ensuring financial survival. Food for thought for
young Salesians interested in influencing the world of communications
