Close call in Cambodia
SIHANOUKVILLE: 11th September 2009 -- As the fortunately
uninjured Fr Rodas put it "In moments like this, we discover how
fragile life is". He and some of the group of boys and adults he
was travelling with, escaped serious injury when their vehicle hit a
truck in Phnom Penh. Not quite so lucky were Fr Luis Oyazo of
Phon Penh and several of the Brother Sun group and a volunteer from
Sihanoukville, who needed treatment and an overnight stay in
hospital. But it would seem that all are now doing well.
It has not been a good week in this regard, given
the tragic event in Thailand and now this. Fr Wong, who came
quickly to Bangkok to help facilitate arrangements for the transfer of
Fr Macapinlaac's body to Manila and to comfort those most closely
affected by the tragedy, soon found himself by yet another bedside,
this time in Cambodia's capital.
The Sihanoukville group had decided to come to Phnom
Penh to catch up with Fr Wong who is on an animation visit to Cambodia.
The incident occurred in heavy rain and poor visibility when the group
had already reached Phnom Penh on the afternoon of September 9th.
Fr Wong had originally intended to visit all
Salesian locations in Cambodia, but the monsoon rains made that
impracticable. He visited Phnom Penh and Poipet; Sihanoukville was
deemed not possible, but the Sihanoukville group have now met him at
the Sensok International hospital in Phnom Penh!
