Salesian Bulletin, Seoul, July-August issue 2020 -- Twelve months in the life of each Salesian consecrated religious, brothers or future priests - the novitiate - probably makes the strongest impact on the whole Salesian lifetime. According to the Constitutions, the novices are introduced to the basics of religious and spiritual life, learn the SDB Constitutions, Salesian traditions and basics of the mission, spirituality and way of life.

However, the young digital generations, growing up within the virtual world with their 'gadgets', also need an introduction to the Don Bosco way of communicating. Every year, halfway through their novitiate (June), the Korean novices have a chance to enter more deeply into Salesian social communication during a week-long seminar - workshop.

The recent July issue of the Korean Salesian Bulletin (no.163) features the novices with their novicemaster (Fr Felix Wee) on its cover and the related article presents the one year novitiate process in a very personal and concrete way with the vocation stories of each of the 4 novices coming from very different backgrounds.

And the July issue of the SDB KOR province newsletter in a 6 page article shares the novitiate's 5 day social communication workshop under the guidance of the Seoul DB Social Communication Centre team: 'Time of vocation growth through the media'. During the workshop, step-by-step from the basics, first watching the previous novitiate batches' videos and drafting their own video-story. They are very much aware of the younger generation's 'YouTube' tastes.

Although their 4 minute video is not yet with English subtitles, you can easily follow the fast moving vocation story dialogue among the novices with the respective background images, starting from being attracted by the Fr. John Lee movie 'Don't Cry Tonj'. The video is aimed at young Koreans who might be interested in a Salesian vocation. With fast-moving video cuts and rapid dialogue among the novices any young men can easily understand the essence of the Salesian vocation, two forms of one vocation and formation path.
