austraLasia #2899 From Jakarta to Sumba … a First Profession
Weepangali, Sumba: July 30 – August 2, 2011 --
Twenty Salesian Cooperators and friends of Don Bosco made a
pilgrimage to Sumba, in a kind of tour that centred on
appreciating the 9 year Salesian presence in the island. Led
by Fr. Yohannes Boediraharjo, SDB who is the delegate for
Indonesia, the group visited the Sumba Cathedral, the FMA
community and other significant cultural, religious and
touristic places. However, the group spent most of the time
with the Salesians and the novices who care for the “Don
Bosco Budi Daya” – a training centre for boys, with courses
in Automotive, Electrical, Woodworking and Metalworks.
The highlight of this visit was the First Profession of the
8 novices: 6 clerics and two Salesian Brothers. Fr. Yohannes
Boedi received the first vows while the FMA and Salesian
Cooperators represented the families of the novices. Most of
the novices’ relatives could not come because Sumba Island
is a bit isolated. It takes three hours of flight time from
Jakarta to Sumba, not counting the time for transferring to
a smaller propeller-type airplane in Denpasar. The
Mass and ceremony of the First Profession was also attended
by some diocesan priests, sisters, friends and the youth of
the oratory. _________________ AustraLasia
