austraLasia #2886 DBTC leads technical education in the Punjab
LAHORE: 12 July 2011-- No-one at the Don Bosco
Technical Centre in Lahore could have dreamt of the
consequences of the official visit by the Technical and
Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) Chairman. His visits
to the more than 450 Centres affiliated to the TEVTA
normally last not much longer than 10 or 15 minutes… but he
spent a full 2 hours at DBTC, where he was given a practical
lesson in Electrical Training with the newly computerised
laboratories (non-existent in the rest of the
country), interacted with all the local staff and saw
for himself the progress of the Centre over the last 10
years. Most importantly, he was touched by the family spirit
and judged the whole setting ‘an educative intervention that
truly touches the lives of the poorest youths in our
country’.
He then proposed a roadmap of
cooperation between the Centre and the Government which will
maximise service to the local youth. The areas proposed are
the following
1.To replicate the state of the art
labs at DBTC in some Government Technical Institutes.
2.Consultancy with DBTC on
development of Teacher Learning Materials (TLRs).
3.Sending groups of TEVTA teachers
to DBTC to study institutional good practice.
4.Training of TVET trainers at
DBTC.
As part of the specific initiatives to be
undertaken together, a tailor-made course is being organised
both for Don Bosco Technical Staff of the South East Asia
Region and TEVTA managers in Germany, and a workshop for
some 50 TEVTA technical managers will be conducted by the
DBTC Team, Lahore this coming September.
It is time to look back in gratitude to Fr Hans
Dopheide from the Australia Pacific Province. It was he who
pioneered the Project and set up the goals that are now
being achieved thanks to his solid foundation and wise
guidance during the 1st stages of the Salesian presence in
Lahore. _________________
