World
Youth Day - further information
SYDNEY: 20th February 2008 -- Readers have possibly
noticed in press
reports that the WYD Cross was recently brought to the Australian
Parliament in Canberra, a significant moment in this country and on the
journey towards the World Youth Day itself in a few months time.
Here, at this point, are some further details for
the WYD event which will be of interest to all Salesians and Salesian
groups,
especially those coming from outside Australia.
As a worldwide Church event, hosted by the Sydney
Archdiocese, all
arrangements pertaining to WYD are handled by the official committees
and groups
set up for that purpose - and these details are available, along with
plenty of other information, from the WYD website www.wyd2008.org.
The
Australian Salesians are part of that overall organisation, but do not
'call the shots' when it comes to all the specific WYD organisational
matters such as accommodation or transport. However, another
website you should watch regularly is the
Australian Salesian website www.sdb.org.au. (Interestingly, the
CathNews Service in Australia recently highly rated this webite: "The
site itself ranks up there with any religious order site in the country
and its extensive resources are a treasure".
Within the overall
WYD programme, the SDB Province is organising two
separate activities, one in Melbourne as part of the 'Days in the
Diocese' preparation, and one in Sydney as part of the WYD event. The
formal 'Days in the Diocese' programme being organised by the Province
takes place on Friday 11th July in Melbourne. It is primarily for
Salesian communities and their work in that Archdiocese, but certainly
visiting Salesian groups are welcome to join in should they be in that
city. More details on that event will be available soon - again, keep
an eye on the Province website.
During the WYD week in Sydney, the Province is
organising a
gathering of pilgrims from around the world with Salesian connections.
It is but one activity within a whole week of WYD activities. It takes
place on Wednesday afternoon and evening, 16th July at Engadine, a
suburb in the Southern area of Sydney. The Rector Major will be present
for this event.
The Province Vocation Team will have a vocation
booth at WYD at the
main venue.
All available places in the Catholic sector - and
for that matter
in many other sectors, have been 'requisitioned' by the WYD Committee,
for
accommodation purposes. This includes Salesian places. Any
requests
for accommodation have to be made through the WYD formal arrangements
(visible on the WYD website). All pilgrims and groups MUST register
through this website. Only registered and paid up pilgrims will be
granted accommodation, receive catering, receive passes to various
activities and events, and be granted free public transport in Sydney
during the week.
The Registration form does indicate the possibility
of seeking
accommodation in a particular place (in this case a Salesian
place). To make such a request, the registration form
question which asks: "Links with other groups?" must receive the
response "Yes. Salesians of Don Bosco Australia". Another question
which asks
"Links to the Church in Sydney?" receives the response "Yes, St
John Bosco Parish and St John Bosco College ENGADINE".
Registrations close by the end of March, so should
be done now.
Registration for the SALESIAN EVENTS described above
is done via
the Australian Salesian website.
Transport to and from Sydney (in the case where a
group may be in
another city) must be organised by the pilgrim group.
