Rector Major visits Miyazaki, in Japan (3)
November 9, 2018
Miyazaki, Japan, 9 November 2018 -- On 8 November, the Rector Major arrived in Miyazaki Airport in the afternoon and was welcomed by 30 or so Salesian family members fromKyushu, one of the main islands of Japan in the southwest. In the evening, around 50 teachers from the Salesian Hyuga High School surrounded him and in the typical Salesian family atmosphere and spirit of hospitality, a convivial meal was shared. Fr Angel gave a ‘buonanotte’ to the teaching staff, in which he emphasized the message that “In order to reach their hearts, it’s important not only to convey knowledge, but to give your heart to the students.”
Later in the evening, according to the custom in sdb houses, the Rector Major enjoyed reflecting on the day with all Salesians present. With the help of Japanese Sake (rice wine), all participants talked feely and openly, overcoming the usual Japanese shyness.
Next day, on 9 November, the program of the new day began with Mass at 9 o’clock at Hyuga High School hall with 690 students, teachers, 25 Salesian Cooperators, 37 Caritas of Jesus sisters, 17 FMAs, religious and diocesan priests from neighboring communities and 10 Salesians attending. In the Mass, the Rector Major emphasized that “Unity” is a beautiful thing we need to cultivate and that the gathering today is sign of “Unity”.
After the Holy Eucharist a Q&A session with the students was organized. The students raised questions which the Rector Major answered. At the end of his time at Hyuga High School, the Rector Major visited the school festival, an annual major event that coincided with his visit. The Rector Major was surrounded by crowds of students and visitors who eagerly asked to take pictures with him.
The Rector Major and the confreres accompanying him were invited for lunch at the Caritas Sisters’ nearby.
