SYM EAST ASIA-OCEANIA: SCHOOLS FOCUS
MELBOURNE: 2nd September -- The Salesian Youth Ministry
conference concluded on Friday last with all delegates and representatives
of Salesians from the East Asia-Oceania region finding value in the
experience. The region is so diverse in thinking and languages
.... but it was such a gift to share a common spirit, and to be
inspired and lead by Fr Antonio Domenech. and Fr Mario Baclig as they continued
to build on previous conferences - striving to help delegates and relevant
people animate SYM within Salesian centres of work - be they schools, parishes,
youth centres ... One of the common factors in the region's SYM, it
would appear, is the school, certainly a presence that has meant much both in
terms of evangelization in very different circumstances (from multi-religious
Asia to secular Australia). The Melbourne meeting gave particular emphasis
to this facet of Salesian ministry to young people, and delegates were
appreciative of the degree of cohesion they discovered in the Australian
Salesian school experience The meeting also
looked at animation at the provincal level and the regional level. As Fr.
Michael Court, an Australian delegate puts it, "I personally found the
experience excellent, Mario is such a clear thinker, but also aware of the pace
of everyone. And of course if you get such a large group of younger
Salesians there is much synergy to be had!!"
