ITM Missionary Send-Off for Papua New Guinea
Indonesia's first
missionary
JAKARTA: September 3, 2006
-- The SDB formation communities of Sunter and Tigaraksa, with the FMA
sisters, gathered for a solemn vespers and the giving of the missionary
cross to two young confreres who will start their assignment in the
missions of PNG. The rector of the Post-Novitiate community, Fr. Peter
Tukan, SDB presided over the prayers and gave a sermon on missionary
vocation and Salesian traditions. The assembly also acknowledged the
presence of veteran SDB and FMA missionaries, who serve as examples for
all.
One of
the new missionaries is Cleric Peter Ryan Vergouw, born in Jakarta. He
will be the first missionary from Indonesia. The other
cleric is Felixberto Ximenes, born in East Timor. He will be the
6th young missionary from East Timor. Both of them will continue their
Practical Training in PNG.
It was a
coincidence that while the ceremony of sending off two young
confreres was going on, the newly ordained Timorese priests (Fr.
Basilio Pereira and Fr. Agapito Ximenes) were just arriving from the
airport. They had finished their theology in Messina then spent some
weeks in Lisbon practicing their Portuguese. This coincidence
served to point out the cycle of sending off and welcoming into the ITM
vice-province.
