Fiji fires up: young leaders energized at DBH meeting
SUVA: 26th August 2006 -- Don Bosco House, the only
Salesian community in the Fiji Islands, has been characterised from the
outset for its energetic presence amongst Fiji, and especially Suva's
young people. Contact with Suva youth, given the Pacific Islands
phenomenon of youth flocking to a single urban centre, means
effectively contact with youth far and wide through broader family
connections. The work that began with primary school children
nine years ago now means that there is an active group of young men and
women in late teens and early adulthood connected with the community
and the visit of the Provincial, Fr Frank Moloney, has been an
opportunity for that to be taken to a deeper level.
The leadership group, ably led in turn by
Bro.Taisali along with the other community members (a number of whom
are in final stages of preparation for priesthood), has met at Don
Bosco House Nakasi to look to further planning for a Salesian and
Salesian-inspired presence and activity amongst Fiji youth, but in the
context of a day of prayer and adoration and vocational intent.
Fr Leo Heriot, now stationed in Fiji, has been giving the youth some
input along these lines.
A photograph of the group with the Provincial is
viewable at this link. It is not attached to this email.
The same link may later contain additional photos. The 'Fiji' link is
due for updating shortly, but for now, it gives a useful historical
overview of an important Salesian presence in the South Pacific.
