Fire in southern Philippines destroys 30 homes
including part of Don Bosco Training Centre
PASIL: 10th July 2006 -- A fire early this morning
around 5.30 has left some 30 families homeless and destroyed part of
the Don Bosco Training Centre at Pasil, which is part of Cebu
City. The fire appears to have begun outside the compound but
quickly spread and was not brought under control until 7.00 am, though
firemen responded immediately to calls for help.
A portion of the audiovisual room at the Training
Centre was destroyed. Fr Julius Sanchez, the Provincial, went
straight to the scene to make an assessment of the damage and to ensure
that all due help was being offered to the victims of the blaze, some
of whom are now taking shelter in the basketball gym while they wait
for Government assistance.
In the meantime classes have been suspended and
trainees have been told to report tomorrow. Some trainees turned
up to help when news of the fire reached them, and were able to help
save parts of the second floor of the Training Centre. Classes
had only just resumed after the holiday period. There are
currently over two hundred trainees taking courses in welding,
carpentry, automotive mechanics, machine operations and dressmaking.
