MANILA: August 4,
2014
--"200 years
ago he
started a trend. This year let's make him trend.
#HappyBirthdayDonBosco". Thus begins a campaign run
by young Filipino
SDBs.
What
is this trending all about, you ask? Essentially it
is Twitter
terminology and works on a Twitter alogrithm
(largely unknown) which
determines the amount and velocity of tweets at a
given moment. We
might call it a global heartbeat. Follow the
Filipino SDB campaign ...
The
young confreres of FIN province (SDBs from Postnovitiate
and Theologate
communities) together with young people have begun this
campaign to
make Don Bosco trend in social media on his 199th
birthday, at 12 noon
(GMT+8) on August 16.
The date mentioned is very timely for this province since
FIN is
launching its year-long celebration of DB’s Bicentenary of
birth
through a Salesian Family get-together at Caritas Don
Bosco School, Sta
Rosa, Laguna.
And it is not strange that young Filipinos are running
this campaign,
since for the nth year, the Philippines appears to be the
Social Media
capital of the world. A
global study published last month indicated that
“Filipinos are
using social media platforms 53 hours a week. That’s a
whole 11 hours
more than the global average of 42 hours!”
As of writing, the site indicated 20% of the goal has been
achieved.
Here's hoping that #HappyBirthdayDonBosco trends as our
way of showing
our gratitude to him when he started a trend of saving the
souls of
young people, nearly 200 years ago.
